Project : DHL-CVG Hub North Apron Expansion

DHL Express -- Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, Erlanger, KY

To accommodate additional B-767s (Group IV) and B-747s (Group V) aircraft, DHL expanded their U.S. hub at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. The expansion included adding 55 acres of concrete for the addition of 16 aircraft gates. The program was privately funded and had critical completion dates in order not to impact DHL’s overnight delivery operations.

Project elements of the North Apron Expansion included:

  • Preliminary engineering to determine gate requirements
  • Infrastructure for storm water and glycol collection
  • Over 2,480 feet of MSE retaining wall
  • Over 228,000 square yards of 18-inch PCC concrete.
  • Infrastructure for future ground power units (GPUs) at all gates
  • Fueling hydrants at all gate positions
  • Iron water main and fire hydrants
  • Vehicle barrier wall/security fencing and CCTV monitoring
  • Gate area lighting consisting of twelve apron lighting poles

In addition to the North Apron Expansion, enabling projects included:

  • Expansion of the employee parking lot to add 250 spaces
  • Design-build documents for 53 GSE garages
  • Glycol system modifications to allow deicing for additional aircraft ramp
