Pineda Causeway Water Transmission Mains Project Earns 2024 ACEC Florida Honor Award

Posted April 18, 2024

CHA Consulting, Inc. (CHA) has received a 2024 ACEC Florida Honor Award in the Water Resources category for the Pineda Causeway Water Transmission Mains. The award recognizes CHA’s dedication to delivering impactful, environmentally conscious engineering solutions that positively impact communities and their essential resources.

The City of Melbourne and the City of Cocoa joined forces to improve the redundancy and reliability of their water distribution systems by adding a water main crossing within the Pineda Causeway corridor. Much of the water main was installed using horizontal directional drilling (HDD) to minimize disruption to the environment. The project installed 39,800 feet of 16-inch water main beneath the Indian and Banana rivers, getting as deep as 90 feet below the riverbed. Melbourne’s leg of the project spanned 20,400 feet, while Cocoa’s portion covered 19,400 feet, creating a seamless water network through the Pineda Causeway corridor.

Working together, the cities have significantly enhanced the reliability of potable water flows, pressures, and quality along the 40-mile stretch of Brevard County’s barrier island south of Cape Canaveral. Essential, pristine water is now delivered to over 150,000 residents and businesses, including the esteemed Patrick Space Force Base.
