Town of Salina Landfill Closure and Investigation

CHA completed a remedial investigation and feasibility study of the former Town of Salina landfill. The 55-acre landfill is listed by NYSDEC as a Class 2 Inactive Hazardous Waste Site and is a subsite to the Onondaga Lake Federal Superfund Site due to the presence of hazardous wastes disposed there in the 1960s and early 1970s. We completed the site characterization, involving soil, sediment, surface water, and groundwater sampling. We completed a feasibility study site evaluating closure and cleanup alternatives. The final remedy included landfill capping with both clay and geomembrane caps, footprint consolidation, and hot spot removal. The project also included a major utility relocation and the creation of wetland mitigation areas.

CHA also completed a remedial design of a leachate collection and pre-treatment system. The trench design consisted of a 2,100 LF interceptor trench with submersible extraction well pumps throughout the collection trench and a common HDPE force main. The on-site leachate treatment plant was rated for 25,000 GPD and included an influent pump station; process building with bag filters, air strippers and carbon filtration; and 125,000 gallons of on-site leachate storage. The plant reduced PCBs and volatile organic compound concentrations to acceptable levels to discharge.
