USMMA Building Evaluation

US Merchant Marine Academy -- Kingspoint, New York

CHA prepared a Building Evaluation Report (BER) for the US Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in Kings Point, New York. We evaluated mechanical and electrical systems and assessed potential hazardous materials in 48 buildings on the campus. The evaluation identified deficient conditions and estimated repair costs. The USMMA will use the BER to support repair and alteration, major renovation, and new construction projects to ensure the buildings’ short-term operational continuity. The BER will also be used to plan for long-term major capital reinvestments in the buildings.

Field work was conducted utilizing handheld tablets computers and a proprietary software system developed by CHA to capture digital photos and information regarding existing conditions. The information obtained was presented in a database format with various reporting options. The use of this technology greatly increased the field staff’s efficiency. The report prepared for the project identified deficiencies based on standard Uniformat codes and categorized them in priority order from 1 to 5, with 1 representing “currently critical, immediate concerns or action required."
